Tetrahydrofuran can be explosive when mixed with air; it can form explosive peroxide in the air, which is flammable in case of open flame, high temperature and oxidant; burning produces irritating fumes. Is a heterocyclic organic compound. It belongs to ethers and is the complete hydrogenation product of the aromatic compound furan. It is used as a moderately polar aprotic solvent in chemical reactions and extractions. Tetrahydrofuran is partially miscible with water at room temperature, and some unscrupulous reagent manufacturers use this to make huge profits by adding water to tetrahydrofuran reagent. Tetrahydrofuran easily turns into peroxide during storage. Therefore, commercial tetrahydrofuran is often protected from oxidation with BHT, 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol. Tetrahydrofuran can be stored in a sealed vial with sodium hydroxide in a dark place.

Tetrahydrofuran has the characteristics of low toxicity, low boiling point and good fluidity. It is an important raw material for organic synthesis and an excellent solvent. It has a wide range of uses. Tetrahydrofuran has good solubility for many organic substances. All organic compounds other than propylene and fluororesins, especially for polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, and aniline, have a good dissolving effect, and are widely used as the necessary solvent for the reaction, which is called “universal solvent”.
