Application
Tetrahydrofuran can be explosive when mixed with air; it can form explosive peroxide in the air, which is flammable in case of open flame, high temperature and oxidant; burning produces irritating fumes. It is used as a moderately polar aprotic solvent in chemical reactions and extractions. Tetrahydrofuran easily turns into peroxide during storage. Therefore, commercial tetrahydrofuran is often protected from oxidation with BHT, 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol. Tetrahydrofuran can be stored in a sealed vial with sodium hydroxide in a dark place.
